SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
You might not think a freelance web developer and graphic designer would be invested in preventing and reducing their environmental impact, but I am. Since I’m a sole proprietor business and solely work alone and from home, I am very conscious of my daily life choices.
Here’s a shortlist of practices I do at home (not a complete list):
I’ve adopted a minimalist and zero-waste lifestyle.
I scarcely print anything, but when I do I try to only use sources that have sustainable options.
I do all my work over the computer and do not need to use transportation.
My house runs 100% on solar from a community solar field.
All my lightbulbs are LED.
My thermostat is programmed to be at optimal energy-saving temperatures.
I regularly use daylight instead of interior lighting, and if I do, it is minimal.
I compost all organics – food scraps and yard waste.
I recycle everything that is allowed to be recycled – paper, glass, metals, and plastics.
My house is surrounded by untouched woods and I grow perennials and natural species in my yard. I have some no-mow areas as well.
I try to invest in only high-quality materials and items that are made to last.
At the grocery store, I use mesh produce bags and grocery bags, along with purchasing bulk foods in reusable containers.
I educate others on clean, sustainable living.
I volunteer with Sustainable Stillwater MN.
However, there's always room for improvement.
I am continually working to reduce random waste (includes refusing single-waste plastics from other businesses).
I want to purchase more houseplants that have air-purifying qualities.
I want to plant more plants for pollinators.
I want to replace my showerheads, faucets, and toilets to be low flow.
I want to eat more fruits, vegetables, and grains and less meat.
I want to buy fairtrade coffee and teas.
